Julius Caesar is dead, and the people of Rome want answers. In 44 BCE, a group of conspirators assassinated Julius Caesar the dictator of Rome; later Shakespeare would write a play about the incident. In act 3, scene 2 of William Shakespeare’s The tragedy of Julius Caesar, Antony is able to turn the crowd of shocked and confused mourners into an angry mob of rioters through the persuasive techniques of Aristotle: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos By using the technique of Ethos Antony is able to gain the trust of the crowd, setting them up to support him. Antony is showing the crowd something so personal to Caesar that they create an emotional connection to Caesar and are even more likely to trust anything Antony says. Antony uses his close connection to Caesar to convince the crowd of how tragic Caesar’s death was and how they should mourn him.“My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, / And I must pause till it comes back to me” (3.2.113-114).
