Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to represent conflicts invloving good and evil and to involve morals throughout. The play is classified as a morality play and Arthur Miller used characterization and symbolism to represent his ideas of conflicts invloving good and evil. First off, Arthur Miller created the characters known as Proctor, Elizabeth, and Giles Corey. These characters were created to represent Miller's idea of a play classified as a morality. Proctor is married to Elizabeth and both characers were written in terms of breaking the commandments and sinning. In The Crucible, breaking the commandments was sinful and in Miller's perspective, evil. Procto broke the commandments by not remembering all of the commandments and breaking a commandment. The commandment broken by Proctor was "Thou shall not commit Adultery." In other words, Proctor had an affair with a women other than his wife. Elizabeth had been sinful. Elizabeth lied in court, under oath, that her husband, Proctor had not had an affair. Arthur Miller created these characters and used characterization to take the "evil" and make moral out of the situations. Giles Corey was another character created by Arthur Miller, but for the better side of things. Giles Corey did not break commandments or be sinful. Giles Corey died strong, courageous and brave. Giles Corey was brought into the trial and asked to give out the name of his source. Giles refused and willingly went to jail for the time being. Later, Giles was tortured to death by a press and died a good man. Giles Corey was a good man for not lying to spare his life when he was accussed and by bravely telling people to add more weight to the press as he suffered to is death.
