How Does Atticus Fight For Justice

What does it take to fight for justice? It takes Courage and Beliefs to fight for justice. When someone goes to fight, once they start, they can’t back down. It takes courage to continuously fight for justice, but it takes a belief to even think about fighting. In To KIll A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch fights for justice for an African American man who was accused of a crime he didn’t commit. It took courage to fight for him, even though everyone else told him not to. He did it because he believed Tom was an equally good men. Atticus’ actions show how it takes bravery and beliefs to ignore customs and fight for justice.

Racial slurs and racial rude names, Atticus thinks shouldn’t be said. Atticus defends an African American man. His daughter Scout hears almost everyone at her school call him a “N***** Lover”. When Scout gets home from school, she says, “Atticus, do you defend n******?”, Atticus says back, “Of course I do. Don’t say n***** Scout” (Lee 99). Atticus was trying to stop the use of this racial slur, starting with his own children. Everything starts somewhere, so Atticus started the chain of people not saying this racial slur. While it doesn’t exactly continue on, he still made a difference and stopped someone. Atticus was trying to fight for African Americans to be called the same as any normal white person. Atticus was ignoring the custom of African Americans not being equal, and fighting for equal names. In addition to Atticus not wanting racial slurs anymore, Atticus shows African Americans should be treated the same as whites. After the trial with Tom Robinson he is shot and killed trying to escape from prison. When Atticus hears about this, he says, “ Cal, I want you to go with me out to Helen Robinson’s house, Tom’s dead.” (Lee 314). Atticus wanted to show he cared, and he wanted to comfort Helen. He wanted to help in whatever way he could. He knew a nice man died, and his wife was left alone with the children. He did the only thing he thought could help. He went to her house, notified her, and he tried to comfort her. He treated her how he would treat anybody else. He acted not upon race.
