Courage If one displays courage, he or she doesn’t have to be a superhero fighting crime or facing giant monsters in unknown lands. That person who displays courage can be just anyone off the street in everyday life. Courage is doing something that is scary. Courage is getting over the fear of doing something that seems difficult and just doing it. Atticus from “To Kill Mockingbird” shows courage in many ways. In the beginning of the book, there was a town dog named Tom Johnson. He went rabid and was wondering down the street and was a real danger to everyone near him. Calpurnia called Atticus figuring that he would know how to handle the situation. He took care of it by shooting the dog, which was a surprise the his kids. This was a courageous thing to do because he had a past with guns and felt that he had an unfair advantage against everyone when he had a gun. “... with movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. Most people would have turned down this man but Atticus knew it was the right thing to do. There were many reasons that this would be considered a bad idea, mainly because in such a racist and prejudice time and town, people frowned upon treating black people equal. Everyone wondered why he would even consider taking the case ” For a number of reasons, the main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (100).
