Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee’s very definition, “Real courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Courage comes up so many times in this story throughout almost every single character. The characters that I will be proving the acts of courage in in this essay are Mr. Heck Tate, Mr. Dolphus Raymond, Aunt Alexandra, and Miss Maudie. Theses characters may not show quite as much courage as some of the others but they do help prove what real courage is. Heck Tate is the sheriff of Maycomb County, which means his job is to protect and serve the people of his jurisdiction. I definitely think that he does this. But she still had the courage to put others need before her own. Though I believe some of the other characters had showed much more courage. Characters such as Atticus, Tom Robinson, Jem, ect. Atticus uses all his courage to stand up for Tom during his trial and tries so hard to stand up for him. Tom uses all his might to prove his innocence and stay with his family. And Jem is always standing up for and taking care of scout. Almost every single character in this book shows at least a little bit of courage. As I stated before Courage appears so much in this book throughout so many characters. Heck Tate shows courage by protecting Boo. Dolphus Raymond Shows it by giving the impression of being the towns drunk. Aunt Alexandra shows her courage by backing up Atticus even though she may not think the things he are saying are correct. And Miss Maudie shows it by putting her friends need before her own. All of these characters show that simply because they were licked 100 years before whatever war they are in started that that was no reason for them to not try to
