Lauren Valentine Atticus Finch In the novel To KIll A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the main character Scout, told the story in first person point of view. The story took place in Maycomb, Alabama. It’s a small country town where the weather is very hot in the summer and they had short cold winters. In there small neighborhood everyone knows each other and all the adults watch over the kids making sure they behave. This story occurred during the 1930’s this is a time in our country where there was a lot of segregation and prejudice. In their community, you're either poor or you’re rich. the poor paid for the services of the rich with food they farmed. Atticus Finch was humble, just and moral. He was introduced in the first chapter of the novel. Atticus is the father of Scout and Jem. “Atticus Finch went to Montgomery to pursue [study] law, and his younger brother went to boston to study medicine” (lee 5) . The Antagonist of the story is Bob Ewells. Bob Ewells is introduced in chapter 17. Bob testifies on the stand against Tom Roberson. Bob Ewells was Rude, abusive and racist. One of the conflicts in the story was Atticus and Tom Roberson vs the town people . Atticus was defending tom whom was innocent but no one believed him because he was black. He was accused of raping Bob’s daughter. The conflict is resolved when Tom Roberson was found guilty , and went to jail. Later, he tried to escape and got shot. The second main conflict is between Bob Ewells and Boo Radley. Bob was so mad at Atticus for defending Tom that he tried to hurt Atticus’ kids. Boo followed the kids into the woods. While they were there , Bob tried to attack them but he couldn’t because Boo jumped in and killed Bob first. First, he was a static character because his persona and manners stayed the same throughout the story. He was also considered as a flat character because he was straightforward . To explain, Atticus proved he was humble when he defended Tom an innocent black man who was accused of raping a white little girl. Clearly, Atticus proved in court that Tom was innocent. Atticus could have gone on about how it wasn’t fair that he lost. Instead, he said “We’re not through yet there’ll be an appeal you can count on that.” (Lee 22). Being humble, he took on a case that no one else wanted because he believed in not being prejudice . Another quality that describes Atticus was just. “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in” (Lee 39). This proves that Atticus wanted to be treated the way he treated everyone else. Lastly, Atticus was also moral. “ Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I’ve tried to live so I can look squarely back at him”. (Lee 249) This shows that Atticus was moral by being a good example for his kids. In conclusion, Atticus Finch was an all around great person who worked hard to save an innocent
