In 1998, Cher released Believe, the first song to ever use autotune. Autotune is an electronic vocal effect that 95% of today’s artists use. This is just one element of what is changing the amount of true talent actually seen in today’s music. Many artists nowadays even use computer software to basically write the music of their song for them. Just this shows how little effort can be put into making a great song. But back in the sixties and seventies, people sat in an empty room for hours, days, and sometimes even months, writing their next song. Compare that process, to today's. Electronic music can be done in just that much time. It’s all super simple. It starts out with coming up with a short, two bar melody. After that’s written, it goes straight to being recorded with a keyboard. In the software, the keyboard notes that get recorded will be perfectly recognized, which will give access to editing exactly what was played. With these editing capabilities choose whatever instrument that melody should sound like. Finally, put a bass drum on it to keep a smooth and steady beat. That’s how simple it is to make your music. Now of course, that is not what we hear on the radio. We hear that, along with some lyrics. But today people can spend less than 30 minutes writing their lyrics. Take look some current day lyrics and actually process them in your head, immediately almost anyone will notice that they are not very precise and lack giving the listener something to really think about. Comparing song lyrics from today to one from fifty years ago, it’s obvious that the writer from today used what first came into their head. For example, the number one song in 2016 was “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber. To most people, the song has a memorable melody that makes people think of it as such an incredible song with amazing writing and composition. But when that person actually looks at the lyrics of the song, they’ll see how it really take just minutes to write their song lyrics. A line in this song is “my mama don’t like you and she likes everyone” (Sheeran/Blanco/Bieber). Most of this song repeats this same idea over and over again, in the same simple way. It’s not a line that has as much meaning as one would hope and doesn’t show the true emotion the songwriter had.
