Shani Boianjiu’s The People of Forever Are Not Afraid is a novel that illustrates the development of three girls as a result of their experiences in the army and living in Israel. The People of Forever Are Not Afraid displays the Global Context of identities and relationships and is an exploration of the character's identity formation throughout the novel. The novel gives readers a personal account of how these characters change during their transition from teenagers to adults. Throughout the novel, the three female main characters - Avishag, Lea, and Yeal - face situations that shape them as people. For that while only, it gets to be only her” (Boianjiu 102). This scene connects the two characters in a dark way. Both characters are facing loss, and are facing difficult situations. The point of view of the girl helps us understand not only the hardships of the army but further drives home the point of loss for Avishag. Avishag is forced to think about someone else's problems and reflect on the consequences of the loss of her child and the Sudanese girl. This scene shows major character development for Avishag because she begins to care for others instead of just her own, and the experience of connecting with the girl impacts her identity. She begins to think of others and becomes a more caring person. Another example of changing point of view, is when the character Gali illustrates the everyday hardships of the army. As she and Avishag are working at the border, she says, “‘Hi, Avishag, would you help me take a second look at these IDs?’” (Boianjiu 149) The two characters open the back of the truck of the person they are checking, and the novel says “It was clear to both of the girls that they had never smelled something this awful in their lives.
