In Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge,” there are many literary techniques that contribute to the suspense of the story. The plot of this story focuses on Peyton Fahrquahr and his execution. Fahrquahr tried to burn down the Owl Creek bridge and as result, he was sentenced to be hanged. In the story it appears that the soldiers are just really bad at hanging people; however, it is revealed that they are actually pretty good at it. Throughout the story, Bierce uses suspense to keep the reader wondering what will happen next. Although the main character may have died in the end, he discovered happiness moments before death.
