The Colonial Era was the start of a new nation. Historical figures such as: William Bradford, Samoset, and Myles Standish led dedicated and headstrong people to an unclaimed territory soon to become America. When members of Catholic churches grew frustrated, they embarked on a journey from England to Cape Cod. These people, the “Pilgrims,” landed their ships in Cape Cod in 1620. A record was created of the departure, journey, arrival, and beginning of life in the New World. This document, Of Plymouth Plantation, written by William Bradford, recorded religious and government issues during the Colonial Era. The Pilgrims were quite religious people. They thanked God for everything, and felt that He was responsible for their every need and outcome. According to Bradford, they fell upon their knees and worshipped God when they first arrived at Cape Cod (60). A history textbook, Northern Colonies: The Quest for Religious Freedom, states, “After such a long and dangerous journey, the Pilgrims-as those who arrived on the Mayflower were later called-fell on their knees and blessed God for bringing them safely to America”(22-35). The Pilgrims were said to have believed and worshipped God in a high manner. The account, recorded by Bradford, of the Pilgrims falling to their knees in God’s presence proves their loyalty and faith to God, and relates to the time period. At this time in history, modern technology was not accessible to its citizens. Therefore, a person of the Pilgrims was chosen to record and help delegate important documents. An article quotes, “This proves to be the first foray into government… Bradford, as the main leader of the Pilgrims, remained in New England until his death, giving him the authority of experience and intellect to record the courage of the Pilgrims” (Overview: Of Plymouth Plantation). There are several references to important government documents in Bradford’s work. These documents include: “The Mayflower Compact,” “The General Fundamentals,” and other laws, which are all signed and approved by Bradford. The fact that Bradford signs all of these documents, and was put in charge of leading a record of events for the new colony, shows the new nation’s ambition for an independent, civil body politik.
