How Does Bronte Present Religion In Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre an English novel written by Charlotte Bronte was published in 1847 under the pen name Currer Bell. White Teeth also an English novel written by the British author Zadie Smith was published in 2000. Both novels present a conflict between religion as a personal faith and religion as a set of rules and institutions. Throughout the novel Jane Eyre, Jane battles with the struggle of life and the enduring pain to find a place in society that she fits in with. As the novel progresses Bronte confronts Jane with religion and the different types of Christianity that existed in 1847. Bronte continues to accomplish this, through the use of the diverse characters such as St. John, Brocklehurst, and Helen Burns who expose their striking beliefs in comparison to her subtle ones. Bronte presents Jane as a character who challenges religion even from a very young age when she explains to Brocklehurst that to prevent hell she “ must stay in good health and not die" Jane’s outburst represents her state of mind and her fragility as a character to not understand that death and "hell" are topics that can not be spoken about in terms of mockery. The idea that jane from a young age disagrees with Mr. Brocklehurst and answers him in such a rude tone foreshadows her battle between religion and personal faith in the future.

Mr. Brocklehurst a character who adopts a strict Evangelicalism faith is shown to be a selfish and inconsiderate character who intimidates the young girls at Lowood School for power and self-approval.
