What the Buddhist religion has to offer the modern world is its appeal of deeper understanding of the self. Additionally, the teachings of Buddhism still has relevance in today’s society. I think that Buddhism is a timeless religion because people are always going to want to search for a deeper meaning in life and in themselves. Additionally, because of globalization and the opportunity to be exposed to different cultures and societies, Buddhism could thrive in the modern world. This is due to the diverse methods and teachings within the Buddhist religion, and because of many facets of Buddhism, there is something that can appeal to anyone. Also, because our society is rapidly changing due to technological advancements, we are often caught up in that aspect of life, rather than truly living in the moment. Due to living in a modern society, I think that a modern Buddhist would be challenged to give up one’s material possessions, economic attainments and the thinking that these things bring us happiness. According to Mitchell, “Buddha mentions that happiness comes from such things as family life, life in the Sangha and meditative attainments” (Mitchell, 34). I think that coming to a realization that one’s material wealth cannot contribute to the path of Awakening could be a challenge for a practicing Buddhist. Although I think that it would be challenging, I do think that it is possible to live as a true Buddhist in today’s world. Like all other religions, Buddhism will adapt to the changes in the world, and it will only strengthen ones faith and practice, and this history of Buddhism has proven that it can thrive in challenging
