In The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Celie is the main character, she was abused throughout most of the novel by Alphonso which was her “father” and Albert which was her husband. Nettie, being Celie’s younger and wiser sister, goes to Africa and becomes a missionary. For a while, before Nettie became a missionary in Africa she lived in Albert’s house with Celie. Eventually, she was kicked out and she ended up going to Africa. Celie became slightly depressed because at that time Nettie was her only support system and the only person she could be herself around. When Shug Avery came into Celie’s life there was dramatic change. Celie realized that Shug was the only person she viewed as a friend and felt love towards other than Nettie. Shug soon became Celie’s mentor and changed how Celie viewed herself and others by improving her self-esteem, by being there when no one else was and by giving her confidence. Ever since Celie was a little girl she had been abused and told she was ugly. Shug made her realize otherwise and that everybody has something that makes them beautiful. When Shug came around Celie didn't feel lonely anymore because she had someone to talk to that actually cared about her and what she was saying. When Celie told Shug that Albert beat her, Shug felt remorse and could not look at Albert the same way that she used to. Shug supported her and made her realize that people act differently toward one another but that abuse is never the right thing to do.
