Youth needs good, helpful coaches to get them through whatever sports season. The Jefferson Award is given to someone who does public service to youth and others. Someone who deserves the Jefferson Award is Charlie Harris. Charlie Harris was a hockey coach for the Amery Youth Hockey Association. Charlie Harris deserves the Jefferson Award because he is uplifting and he taught me and my teammates valuable lessons about hockey. Some may argue a teacher deserves the Jefferson award because they have a lot of experience with kids, however, Charlie Harris deserves the award more because he is good at what he does as a coach. Moss, Executive Director at National Council of Youth Sports, he says, “As someone who has been molded by the guiding hand of a remarkable coach, I believe it's the latter. The essence of resiliency, teamwork, leadership, and stick-to-it-ness blossoms under the guidance of mentors, leaving a lifetime legacy in the hearts and minds of young athletes” (Moss, 2023).
