We all enjoy to dream and hope for the best. We have high expectations for the people around us and the situations we face. But, sometimes these idealistic expectations get us in trouble. We find ourselves stuck waiting for some miracle so that our ideals come true. This is Cleofilas from Sandra Cisneros’s short story “A Woman Hollering Creek”. Cleofilas grows up watching telenovelas and reading romance novels. These make her wish to find the passion that can only be found in true love, according to the telenovelas and romance novels. But Cleofilas ends up in a marriage where she is physically and emotionally abused. Cleofilas change from being naïve, through her idealistic ideas, to being courageous, by leaving her husband, show that she is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the story, the author reveals that in the town where Cleofilas grows up “there isn’t much to do, except accompany the aunts and grandmothers… or walk to the cinema to see this week’s film again… or to a girlfriends house to watch the latest telenovela episode” (Cisneros 247). There obviously is not much to do in the town where Cleofilas lives in as a child. Even her father, as he agrees with her marriage to Juan Pedro, dreams of the day Cleofilas will “raise her hand over her eyes, look south and dream of returning to the chores that never ended, six good for nothing brothers and one old man’s complaints” (246). This tells us that Cleofilas is not shown different perspectives of the world. Even after moving in with her husband, Cleofilas is lonely. She says the town is “built so that you have to depend on your husband. Or to stay home” (250). From her childhood, she finds another world through the telenovelas.
