Lee the character Drummond is defending Bertram Cates in the case of the scopes trial. While it might seem like a weird case this did happen in real life as well. The real person for Drummond is Clarence Darrow.
Who Displays Courage? “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” As Harper Lee once wrote, courage is something that anybody can show, as long as you forget about if you are going to lose or win and your selfish reasons and just remember why you are doing it. In “Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes” most of the characters show courage at some point so it was difficult to pick just one person.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
This can be seen when Peewee and Perry get separated from their squad are left to protect each other. They displayed their extreme bravery when they got separated. It was just the two of the them against an entire platoon of Viet Cong warriors. Through this, their valor is shown because they had to constantly push through fear or else they would die. Some may argue that the soldiers do not have courage because they are constantly saying “I’m scared.”

While Japan was breaking treaties and fighting with allied countries, the United States was developing a powerful weapon that would cripple Japan and end World War II.
In battle, there are many ways to be put in the wrong position. A few erratic decisions can cause lifelong problems. In “The Red Badge of Courage” Stephan Crane shows the many situations in battle during the Civil War in 1860. Henry Fleming, also known as “The Youth,” made many notable decisions that would consider him a coward rather than a hero. Henry demonstrates a coward because he ran during the battle, deserted the tattered soldier, and lied to the other soldiers.
She didn’t back down she sat there the whole way home. In the chapter, “Twenty years gone, and I am back again” of the Odyssey, Odysseus shows bravery while planning to come back home with his son Telemachus, “If they make fun of me in my courtyard, let your ribs cage up your spring heart, no matter what I suffer no matter if they pull me by the heels, or practice shots at me to drive me out. Look on hold your anger” (Homer 900). In history, a man who shows bravery is Neil Armstrong. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first man in history to walk on the moon.
It is important to have bravery as a hero because it helps you conquer any fears you have. Daniel showed a lot of bravery and courage fighting aliens. He also showed bravery and courage when accepting the mission of becoming an alien hunter. David showed bravery when going against what the government said which was that differences are bad and someone with a difference is not human. It is brave for David to go against the government because they are in charge of anything and David goes against them they could do very evil things to him.
Bravery and courage are interchangeable words used to describe the mind of a person who faces difficulty and pain without fear, according to Dictionary.com. Bravery is displayed all throughout the heroic tale of Beowulf, named after its protagonist Beowulf. Knowing that Grendel was a very dangerous character, Beowulf chose to offer up his services to halt the terror being caused by Grendel. No one had to seek him out; rather he came on his own accords simply for the good of these people living in King Hrothgar’s kingdom. He put himself in dangers way even though he no real tie to these people, and not asking about any sort of payment before going out on the hunt.
Courage is Earned! Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
It doesn’t actually display bravery, but rather a confused idea of courage that Tim incorprates throughout his novel. In summation, Tim O’Brien exercises what courage truly means throughout his novel The Things They Carried. He seems to come to a consensus that there truly is no singular meaning to courage as each and every person can interpret it differently. A Soldier’s Dilemma Like many others in his regiment, Henry Fleming, protagonist in The Red Badge of Courage, expects the Battle of Chancellorsville to be filled with heroism and legendary acts of dauntless heroism. Heroism, however, seems nowhere to be found, and Henry is left questioning his own valor. In The Red Badge of Courage, Crane writes Henry Fleming as a flawed yet good-hearted character by revealing his inner thoughts as he runs from the battle, his actions directed toward comrades, and by displaying Henry’s differences at the end of the story to emphasize the inner struggle between courage and cowardice.
