How Does Companionship Affect Curley's Wife

Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun, and the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of charity, a religious congregation devoted to serving those in need, is considered to be one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th Century, She once said that "Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat." The lack of love, or caring that comes from a friend or companion, has different effects on different people. For one person, they may start to lose their self-confidence, and begin to look for attention and affection, wherever they can. When Curley's Wife is trying to talk with Lennie, she expresses how the lack of companionship causes someone to search for attention: "'Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely'"(86). Curley's Wife has never experienced companionship, she is never allowed to talk to anyone. This causes her to feel lonely and long for attention. She is looking for a way to express herself through her spoken thoughts and words. When that chance does come, she doesn't want her listener to leave or be taken away, so she begs, and asks him to listen. Additionally, Curle's wife also expresses her inner self, when she begins to tell Lennie of her dream: "And then her words tumbled out in a passion of communication, as though she hurried before her listener could be taken away"(88). Due to the lack of companionship and communication in the life of Curley's Wife, she is full of held in conversation. So when she is finally able to talk it all "tumbled out in a passion of communication." Her words left her mouth in a hurry before Lennie could be taken away, so she may express her feelings in a way she could not before.
