“[Mr Darcy] was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased” (Ch 3). This was the first introduction to Fitzwilliam Darcy in Jane Austen's, novel Pride and Prejudice. It is clearly show how everyone's first impression of Mr Darcy was bad, because of his arrogant, conceited behavior. Though Mr Darcy’s conceited behavior has been made clear to everyone, it is still possible for him to change. Infact the character who has grown the most, in Pride and Prejudice, is Fitzwilliam Darcy, whose conceited behavior lessens and he becomes more open.
To begin, while at the Meryton ball, Mr Darcy’s character is introduced. He is said to be very proud and arrogant: walking around, not dancing with anyone, and only talking with those of his own party. Mr Darcy’s close friend Mr Bingley questions him about why he is not dancing with anyone, and even offers to introduce him to someone, Elizabeth Bennet. Mr Darcy turns and looks at Elizabeth and coldly replies, “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. In this passage, Mr Darcy demonstrates his arrogant behavior that everyone started to hate. First of all, he clearly says that Elizabeth is completely beneath him. She is only “tolerable” and he would never be tempted by her.
