Through this work of non-fiction, David Sedaris explicitly stated his central argument in his witty memoir: Me Talk Pretty One Day. Within the syntax of his memoir, David Sedaris intertwines various arguments within the substance of his words. The focal point of the memoir is to not let your incapability to do a certain thing bring you down because eventually you will be able succeed by learning from past experiences (and using a little humor). The author masterfully develops the argument by a significant amount of verbiage and simplification. David Sedaris uses a chock load of satire and irony throughout the memoir; he scrutinizes every detail of his life with humor and sarcasm. For example, he starts the novel off with the quote: “You could turn up your nose at the president or Coke or even God, but there were names for boys who didn't like sports. When the subject came up, I found it best to ask which team my questioner preferred. Then I'd say, "Really? Me, too!” (Sedaris 5). This quote sets the tone for the entire collection of his stories. At this point Sedaris announces to the reader that the matter of his memoir would be serious to some, but to him it’s material for his comedic style of writing.
