Throughout, the years domestic violence was viewed as a family affair, and should only concern the family, but slowly laws have been passed to insure the safety of people that may fall victim. The United States followed after the European life-style of allowing men to beat their wife, and at the time referred as “men’s violence against their wife”. In the academic journal Legal Advocacy Against Domestic Violence by Barbara J. Hart she mentioned “In 1824 the Mississippi Supreme Court in Bradley v. State voiced approval of the husband's role as disciplinarian and stated its belief that the law should not disturb that role”(pg.3). Domestic violence has been around for many years. Domestic violence however wasn’t considered a major problem or crime until the highly publicized court case in 1972 of Ruth Bunnell. Bunnell was killed by her husband after the police failed to intervene. In the years before Bunnells death, since the police failed to intervene even though Bunnell had called them twenty nine times prior to her death about her husband’s abuse of her and her daughters Bunnell was eventually killed by her husband. The police department was sued because of this and the suing party won.

Spousal Abuse People often turn away from issues that do not affect them, but this only lets the issue grow further until there is nothing left to do but deal with it. This could be why domestic violence has been taking place for centuries now. One issue that comes with domestic violence is spousal abuse- a problem that only seems to be getting worse, with ten million victims being beaten by an intimate partner each year (“Domestic Violence”). Although spousal abuse seems to be an ongoing issue in the United States, efforts are being made at both national and local levels to suppress the violence.
This horrible act can happen in a variety of ways. The abuse can be physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, and economical. Domestic violence is a pervasive problem that is among everyone everywhere. Even if you have not been involved in domestic violence, you may know someone who is or has been affected by it. Domestic violence is the intended act of hurting or dominating a domestic partner. Largely, men direct domestic violence at women. According to Davenport (2012), men directed 85 percent of all domestic violence instances at women. Consequently, in 2008, either their significant other or husband killed more than 55 percent of all female murder victims.
Today, I stand before you with a heavy heart, burdened by the prevalence of a dark and pervasive issue that continues to haunt our society: domestic violence. It is a topic that often remains shrouded in silence and secrecy, leaving countless individuals trapped in a cycle of fear, pain, and suffering. But today, we must raise our voices together and call for an end to this inhumane treatment. Domestic violence knows no boundaries. It transcends race, gender, age, and socioeconomic status.
It is estimated that 1 out of every three relationships has abusive behaviors, including harassing phone calls, texts or IMs isolation from friends or family, physical violence or sexual abuse, put downs and other forms of emotional abuse. The violence stems from a need for one person in the relationship to have power and control over the other person. This is the same dynamic in domestic violence relationships.
