It is the dead hour of night, all is silent but the constant beat of the old man’s heart. The mad man soon attacks. This is the story of Tell Tale Heart. By Edgar Allen Poe. The story takes place in an old man’s house. The main character wants to take the life of the old man cause he hates the old man’s dreadfully creepy eye. But the main character's problem is that he can't get himself to kill the old man without seeing his eye. So he shines a light on the old man's eye and soon attacks. Suspense is the excitement or anxiety of uncertainty of what will happen next. Through the author’s three techniques of suspense he creates a great creepy mood.
In The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe he builds suspense through character anxiety. First off the reader can imagine the fear in the character when he says “... I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror…” (Poe 91). In this the narrator is talking about the old man when he his hears a noise. This shows fear because the old man is in “Mortal Terror”. This creates suspense because the reader would want to know what the old man is afraid of. One example of this is “The hellish tattoo of the heart beating” (Poe 92). This has the words “Hellish Tattoo”, which means an awful drumming. This creates suspense because from this the narrator hears the anxiety in the old man. Another example of Edgar using vivid words is “... The stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe…” (Poe 91). This shows vivid words through the description the narrator gives the old man. He is describing that the old man is scared with an “Overcharged awe” From “ The bottom of the soul”. These two phrases meaning he in shock on how scared he is. This creates suspense because the reader will want to know what the old man does next because he is in such
