How Does Edgar Allan Poe Use Gothic Elements

552 Words3 Pages
Edgar Allan Poe utilizes a Narrative Writing style with a Gothic theme, with most of his works featuring the main character narrating the events around them, albeit being unreliable narrators who only tell the story from their side, a great example of which would be The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado. Furthermore, he employs the use of a plethora of literary devices and intricate diction in many of his literary works. An example of which is The Raven, wherein the writer makes use of symbolism through the raven that stays with the narrator throughout the story, representing the narrator’s grief and also symbolized as a messenger of death by the narrator, thinking that the raven had a message from Lenore, His beloved, for him. But Alas, his hopes were dashed as he continued to ask the raven, with the raven only replying with “Nevermore’’ he gradually spirals from grieving to madness, attempting to drive out the raven perched on the sculpture of Pallas Athena. Another example would be in The Cask of Amontillado, wherein wine symbolizes the foolishness of Fortunato, who allowed his pride of being a connoisseur of fine wine to get the best of him which allowed Montressor to trick him, eventually leading to his demise due to his hubris. Other than Symbolism, usage of the literary device Imagery is also evident in his works.
