One of the most influential authors of all time, Edgar Allan Poe, uses dark imagery and complex syntax to make his short stories and poems harrowing and mysterious. Poe’s tragic backstory contributes to his writing style. Poe’s depressing life, such as the death of his mother, foster mother, and wife to tuberculosis caused him to write stories such as The Masque of the Red Death a story about a disease similar to tuberculosis called the Red Death spread across the country. Another theme throughout some of Poe’s stories is young women dying such as in Annabel Lee and The Fall of the House of Usher. A reason for this is because most every women he loved, his mom, foster mom, and wife, died young.
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
This pathos developed plot is meant to stir the dark emotions of the soul. Poe accomplishes this by using emotional language. This was illustrated many times throughout, but the most important time is when the narrator tried to define his thoughts about the old man. The narrator says he loves the man, yet despises his evil old vulture eye. He seems to talk as if the old man were two separate beings, thus allowing him to love and hate this man.

Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Conan Doyle keep readers on the edge of their seats through the use of foreshadowing and the use of red herrings. In the short story, “Tell-Tale Heart” Edgar Allen Poe creates suspense through the foreshadowing of the old man’s death. Likewise in, “Adventure of a Speckled Band,” a short story, Sir Conan Doyle creates suspense through the use of a red herring which is the gypsies in the lawn.

Readers are dragged along dreadfully anticipating what awful fiend or daunting place will represent Poe’s misfortune next.
