Edgar Allen Poe was a writer, critic, and poet, famous for his tales of horror, fiction and mystery. Edgar Allan Poe wrote many stories including “the Fall of The House of Usher” and “the Tell Tale Heart.” He even wrote a famous poem called “the Raven.” With “the Murders in the Rue Morgue,” he launched a new genre of detective fiction. He earned the name “Father of the detective story” for his literary innovations.

Poe never really knew his father and mother because his father left him soon after his mother died of tuberculosis when Poe was very young. He was separated from his brother and sister and fostered by Frances and John Valentine Allan. Poe had a difficult relationship with John Allan. He really connected with Frances but, when he wanted to be a poet, John discouraged him. At an older age he lived in Baltimore with his aunt and cousin. His cousin, Virginia, became his writing inspiration and his love interest. He secretly married her when she was 13 and he was 24. When she died at the age of 24 from tuberculosis, Poe was deeply affected. He suffered poor health. Poe’s hardships prepared him for the life’s work to come. In 1827, Edgar moved to West point to be in the US military academy. After leaving West Point, he moved to Baltimore with his aunt and cousin. The death of his cousin and deeply beloved foster mother shaped Edgar Allan Poe’s adult life. His adult life was also shaped by his failures with the president and at the West point military academy. Edgar Allan Poe faced the challenges of being left alone when his mother died and father left him.
