How Does Elie Wiesel Lose Faith

“I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes i’ve been closer to Him for that reason” - Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel explains how he hasn’t lost his faith and that it is even stronger since the events of the Holocaust and his anger towards his God. Elie’s constant struggle made him not only lose faith but even become numb to all the constant pain around him. Adapting to the setting of consistent emotional and physical pain. This constant pain however lead to the strengthening of Elie and allowed him to get through the Holocaust with his life, a necessary thing to do. Not transforming into a brute, but merely his need to become stronger and less emotional towards everything even other’s lives.

Towards the beginning of the story, all Elie could think about was his father's survival putting his father before him in tense situations always checking on him and often bailing him out of situations that would lead to certain doom. “I was thinking of my father” 59, always thinking of his father no matter the situation even when being subjected to whippings as punishment his father's well being is the first thing that crossed his mind. As the torture got worse and began to bear down on Elie even harder he began to realise his father's inevitable fate being too old and weak to continue on for however long the holocaust should remain for.”If only I didn't find him” 106, Elie stating that if he hadn’t found his father it would’ve been a huge weight off his shoulders and he could take care of himself more, but after saying these he immediately regrets it and dismissed it as a terrible thought to even cross his mind. When inevitably Elie’s father does pass, he states “since my father’s death nothing mattered anymore” 113 Elie didn’t even care to remember the events after his father's death cause he states it doesn't matter. But he had undergone some hardships that made him angry at his god allowing such atrocities to happen to these people. “We were coming closer and closer to the pit” 33, as Elie neared the pit he couldn't believe something like this could happen seeing babies even being dumped into fire to be killed, thrown away like trash and his God is doing nothing in his eyes about it.
