In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.
My thought of Elie Wiesel talking about compassion is, since he was in the Holocaust some like Miep and Mr. Kraler showed compassion to the Franks and Van Daans by giving them a place to to hide and food to eat so they can survive. Elie Wiesel must of shown a lot of compassion to people and that might be one of the reasons why he survived Auschwitz he must have shown compassion to some or most and he might have been shown compassion by those people. When I first saw Elie Wiesel I saw that he had a good soul. He didn’t look like he would do anything bad to anyone. I could image him as that person who’s always there for you, he shows compassion.
Compassion is a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick, hungry, in trouble. These three factors are important throughout the book, I chose prompt 1. Situations as dark and serious as the Holocaust cause major changes that cause a person to think extremely negative thoughts about something they once loved. Now, he is questioning the most basic principles of his religion, He feels anger toward God because he is making so many people suffer, and by using words such as “tortured” and “butchered”, he expresses this anger in a dynamic way. Elie Wiesel was a young boy when he did survived the holocaust.. In his memoir Night, we follow his journey as a Jewish boy in a time where expressing your religion could mean life or death. Between living under the watch of Nazi regimes, trying to keep his father alive, and surviving the inhumanity of others, Elie’s had fought and lived through the genocide unlike any other. There is a set time frame between life and death. Once the line is crossed, there is no return. This is why Elie Wiesel feels it is so important to bear witness. Bearing witness is to be a constant observer, to consider all possibilities, and to act when it is time. Elie Wiesel wrote his memoir Night so people could learn to act when it is necessary.
Compassion is an extremely powerful emotion. It’s when you help someone get through an awful time in their life. He see’s what's happening and he soon begins to lose his faith and his hope for the future. All in all, we may have never seen the strength or bravery of Elie, had he not kept going forward. He strengthened his faith, and eventually survived Auschwitz. Holocaust survivors seem to always say that without courage and faith, you would never make it out. Another example of this would be when Elie receives gifts from his father.
Humanity is capable of doing many things, both good and bad. Humans are selfish, we prioritize what is important to us and what is not. Brutal situations such as the Holocaust show the extent that a human being will go to survive. Elie and his fellow prisoners go through many hardships, such as starving and leaving loved ones to die. Each day for them, is a blessing because they do not know when they are going to die, it could be the next day or even the next hour.
Elie Wiesel’s somber speech, “The Perils of Indifference”, demonstrated the harsh reality of the numerous evils harvesting in the world. The main evil though was simply indifference, or a lack of concern. As a young Jewish boy, he faced the wickedness of the Holocaust, imprisoned at Buchenwald and Auschwitz and also losing both his parents and younger sister. The speaker saw atrocious horrors and suffered for a prolonged amount of time. Why was this permitted?
Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.
