Imprisoned Because of Beauty Esperanza is an outgoing and courageous young girl who develops in many ways throughout the book, The House on Mango Street. She experiences a variety of life changing moments that have shifted her view on not only herself, but her community as well. Throughout the book, Esperanza comes in contact with an assortment of different females, all of which have different experiences in life. Those experiences have turned them into unique individuals. These women with different pasts demonstrate what it was like to be a girl in Esperanza’s town.
The novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is about how a young hispanic girl discovers her identity. Esperanza’s family moves to a poor, predominantly hispanic town in Chicago. As she adjusts to her new neighborhood, she learns from her neighbors and from her own experiences in this new town. In particular, her traumatizing experiences with sexual assault have impacted her. Esperanza’s identity as an independent hispanic girl is shaped by her experiences in sexual assault because it presents her with the dangers many minorities face.
In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros reveals the importance of growing up in the main character, Esperanza, and her friends. Throughout the story Esperanza and her friends experience many parts of growing up whether from trying francy shoes to the understanding of the world around them to getting a job to earn money. First, In the vignette And Some More, Esperanza, her younger sister Nenny, and her friends Lucy and Rachel look up to the sky and observe the clouds. In this vignette you can see the age difference of Esperanza and her friends to Nenny, this is shown when Esperanza says, “That’s cumulus too.
She gets know Rachel and her sister and they ordered from her some money to become a friend with her. Although she was broken and she hates to take money from her sister, she did give them money. Esperanza invest her money for friendship will last to the end of her life. Rachel and her sister were the free prisoners who save her Esperanza.
She however is very reactive to this situation, she doesn’t tell anybody what happened, she steals late passes, hides in an abandoned janitor closet, and eventually ditches school. That example shows how irresponsible she is. House On Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, is about a young girl who moves into a new house with her family in Chicago Illinois in the early 1980’s. Esperanza is not a very happy person, especially after the year she had at the house on Mango Street.
In the book, The House on Mango Street, Esperanza is portrayed as a young innocent girl that drastically changes over the course of the book. Esperanza is new to mango street and encounters many challenges but also positive experiences that she is able to take away from mango street. In order for Esperanza to transform as a human it was inevitable for her to face the struggles on mango street. As Esperanza matures throughout the novel she experiences three major developments that shape her future through the awakening of maturity, responsibility and her awakening of her interest in poetry.

The House on Mango Street is a touching and timeless tale told in short vignettes. It tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. Her life, and the lives of the people around her, are laid bare to the readers in this touching novella. In the beginning, Esperanza is not accepting of herself. Her family’s poor financial situation, the sadness of the people around her, and the problems she faces in her daily life make her very cynical.
Esperanza shows she wants to go to college unlike her family. Sara and Esperanza struggled reaching their goals. They had to choose to go to college or face their unpleasant life. The only encouragement Esperanza gets from her mother, as she says, "Esperanza, you go to school. Study hard.
Still Esperanza does not get what is going on at this point. She is still so naïve and innocent. Sometimes the reader forgets how young she actually is because of the things she is going through at such a young age. Her mind and her decisions are moving at a faster pace, but she is still so blind to the world.
In the House on Mango Street, Esperanza is seeking for an identity of her own. In her current neighborhood, she struggles with economic, cultural, and gender based barriers to personal growth, and she believes that changing her surroundings is her solution; however, she realizes that to discover her identity, her ultimate destination is a home in the heart. The house on Mango Street was one that was the opposite of what Esperanza had dreamt her entire life. The house is, “…small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you 'd think they were holding their breath... bricks...crumbling in places, and the front door...so swollen you have to push hard to get in".
