An example of this is from the reading “SantaLand Diaries” where David realized that life was not going as expected. He is thirty –three years old and applying for an elf job. He tries to imagine a whole new world where he is able succeed and accomplish his dreams within three weeks of being in New York. In the reading he says “I’m trying to look on the bright side” he is using this imaginative world to help him get through a really tough time within his life.
During times of war, soldiers would encounter death left and right, either if it were their friends or enemies. As a result, many people, including the characters in The Things They Carried, had been scared physically and emotionally due to the death of allies or enemies. Many people deal with their emotions in different ways, some in positive ways and some in negative ways. Characters such as Tim O’Brien, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, and Norman Bowker were haunted by the deaths of the people around them, and dealt with their grief by internalizing their feelings, getting rid of distractions, and talking to imaginary people. Tim O’Brien is haunted and is reminded by his past actions because he killed what he thought was an innocent young man.
Authors can use Humor in many different situations, it can be used to give the audience a quick scoff, promote change, or even for dramatic effect. Humor is used by Ken Kesey very prominently especially when the patients do not seem to have the ability to laugh at anything nor find anything funny. The patients live a very dull life in which they repeat their monotonous cycle of life in the ward. They no longer have known what it is like in the norm because of the Big Nurse wears them down with the oppressive nature of the Combine.
There is not one chapter in this novel that doesn’t contain some form of humor, whether it be sarcasm or a hyperbole. For example, when Ford made fun of humans for stating the obvious, “One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continually stating and repeating the very very obvious...are you alright?”(48) It’s funny because, if you really think about it, everyone does this. If it’s cold outside, we’ll tell each other, “hey, it’s cold” or “boy, it’s really chilly outside.” There’s more than phrases and quotes that are humorous, there is also a few characters that resemble humor, such as Marvin the Robot.
Humor is used in stories, poems, and fiction books. In the poem “Casey At The Bat” Ernest Thayer uses great examples of humor. Humor is the type of thing you read and you kind of laugh in your brain but don’t laugh out loud. I will show you some great examples of humor that Ernest Thayer uses in his poem “Casey At The Bat”. In the poem the author says, “And the former was a hoodoo while the latter was a cake”.
He used humor in his writing’s to lighten up the mood but also remain realistic while doing so. For example in Twain’s memoir “Life on the Mississippi” he says, “When his boat blew up at last, it diffused a tranquil contentment among us such as we had not known for months.” Here Twain is using irony to add a sense of humor in his writing. Unlike Twain, Frederick Douglass was not as humorous in his writings.

Primarily, in the Great Gatsby, the author, Fitzgerald uses satire to demonstrate to the audience the social connection between the relationship with wealth. Furthermore, the author achieves this by using a horatian satire to demonstrate the affluent use their money as an advantage to get a from consequences. In the novel, Tom and Daisy were careless people, who tried to move away from their home because of Gatsby’s death.
One of the most interesting (and probably the strangest) things that I found in Flaubert’s “A Simple Heart” was the relationship between Félicité and her parrot Loulou. From the very beginning, the relationship between the two proved extremely significant to Félicité as the bird brought a little bit of happiness into her miserable life that had been plagued with loss and death. The bird was such an important companion to her that after his death, she could hardly handle it and was completely distraught. In fact, “she cried so much her mistress said ‘All right, then—have him stuffed’” (page 281).

A prominent example in the story was Brod. “[Brod] had to satisfy herself with the idea of love—loving the loving of things whose existence she didn't care at all about. Love itself became the object of her love” (80). She had experienced many life difficulties and hardships which contributed to her hopelessness of finding and having love.

But how and why do we consider things to be funny at all? Human beings have strived to uncover fundamental truths about human nature for centuries – even millennia – but humor itself is still yet to be pinpointed. Henri Bergson is only one of many who has attempted this feat, and his essay Laughter: an essay on the meaning of the comic from 1911 breaks down comedy into what he believes to be its essential forms and origins. While Bergson makes many valid points, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times that was brought to screens only twenty years later seems to contradict many of Bergson’s theories, while Bergson seems to contradict even himself over the course of his essay.
