Imagine this… You're in a train going to South Africa and the workers on the train throw you out because you're a certain race or color. Even though you have first class tickets on the train they make you walk the rest of the way to South Africa. How would you feel if it happened to you and how would you react. Would you fight back or allow them to push you around? Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi allowed these people to push him around but in the end he fought back in a peaceful manner to have India gain its independence. Gandhi believed in civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws that are unfair or unjust in a peaceful manner. Many people believe that civil disobedience is not effective or an unreasonable way to create change, but I believe that civil disobedience is an effective way to stop unfair laws and create social change. An example of this is the salt march held in South Africa where Gandhi and thousands of other Indians marched 240 miles to the Indian Ocean to collect salt from the sand. This is an example of civil disobedience because the British empire banned all salt production from any Indians. Since they were peaceful, this is a prime example of Civil disobedience. Since they went against the law the British arrested many people that day because of them selling the salt. Even though many people at the time thought that Gandhi made no sense by being non-violent but in the long run it worked out perfectly for the Indians. Gandhi knew that if the Indians actually fought the british they would lose very quickly. Because of this, Gandhi went on more peaceful protests against the British and eventually India gained its independence from Great Britain.
