Adolf Hitler was a German politician and the leader of the Nazi Party during WWII. Big Brother is the ruler of Oceania, a totalitarian state in which the ruling Party holds total power over the people inhabiting it. The author of 1984, George Orwell, included similarities between both totalitarian regimes. Hitler was a dictator, just like Big Brother. They had different ways of how they ruled their government, but had the same purpose. They loved the power and liked to be superior to everyone. Big Brother is basically a replication of Hitler. They both had the dictative leadership, propaganda techniques, secret police and many other manipulative ways to make people follow their lead. This is when Emmanuel Goldstein is introduced. He is the main enemy of the state (according to the Party) and depicted as the head of a mysterious organization called the Brotherhood. He is only seen and heard on telescreen, and is merely a fabrication of the Ministry of Truth. In the novel, Goldstein is a character rumored to be a former top member of the Party and an early associate of its leader, "Big Brother", but had broken away early in the movement and started "The Brotherhood". Supposedly the Brotherhood is organized into cells, with each member required to read The Book, supposedly written by Goldstein called The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. Emmanuel Goldstein is a scapegoat used to deter the people of Oceania from the real issues within the state. It is a tactic that helped Big Brother to brainwash the population, and is exactly what the Nazis did to Jews during WWII. Goldstein is presented as someone who lurks in the shadows and causes problems for the party and Oceania as a whole. Anti-semitism existed in Germany many centuries before WWII began. Hitler and the Nazi regime used anti-jewish feelings that had existed long before he came to power. The Jews were blamed for the loss of WWI and the creation of democratic government. They also fabricated a world domination conspiracy by the Jews. Another myth that had arisen about Jews for centuries was that it Jesus Christ was killed by Jews. Many Catholic Germans would learn this in Church and read about it in books. Many people thought badly about Jews even before the Nazis came into power.
