How Does George Orwell Use Flashback In 1984

434 Words2 Pages
The purpose for authors to sometimes not follow a chronological sequence of events in their literary works is to withhold things from the reader that later in the book can be relevant to the plot. This is done through flashbacks. Orwell uses flashbacks as a form of foreshadowing things that happened a longtime before the present can help to present motives in the present and help intensify the plot. This helps the reader better understand what drove the character to the point they’ve gotten to without it literally being said in the book. Everytime Orwell flashes back in the story it causes his reader to think and be able to have to figure out how these events correlate to the stories present.
