A totalitarian government is one that tries to control every aspect of a person's life. Totalitarian governments are usually rich with advanced technology and control people and what they believe by the use of propaganda. However the people they control are forced to live in abject poverty. This is clearly demonstrated in 'Catching Fire' and '1984' . Each district in 'Catching Fire' has a specific job and everyone is expected to work, there is a lack of food and there are security guards known as "Peacekeepers" everywhere making sure there is order while also having many hidden security cameras.
All citizens of Oceania live in Totalitarian country, where they are motivated to love Big Brother and the Party. Ultimately there will be people who don’t love Big Brother, and believe that they live in a horrible place; Winston Smith was one of these people. Not only did Winston Smith despise Big Brother, he was motivated to overthrow the Party and defeat it once and for all. Winston also broke Party rules whenever he wanted too, although it made him anxious. At the start of the book, Winston buys a journal, which is forbidden in Oceania as it is thoughtcrime.
In the book 1984, by George Orwell, the Big Brother, aka the government, is oppresses the citizens of Oceania through spying on them, monitoring every second of their lives, and controlling them through threats and by using this surveillance. The illiberal government in this novel imposes what would be harsh violations of several of the rights Americans have such as their privacy, independence, and freedom. The citizens in the novel are strippe of their all individualism because of Big Brother’s negative influence in their lives. Big Brother justifies that spying on its citizens helps everyone as a group and is necessary for everyone. Today the NSA (National Security Agency) has a striking resemblance to Big Brother as both justify spying with “security” and the “benefit” of the people.
Totalitarian governments have consistently been searching for a method to obtain absolute power. It took Stalin years to find a system powerful enough to keep the people repressed until his downfall of the USSR. Hitler’s ideas were strong enough to maintain power for roughly ten years before he became to greedy. The required manner achieve power, to the extent of absolute control, is known to the party. The awareness of what needs to be done is the single distinguisher from past totalitarian governments that the party holds.
Throughout history governments have evolved in their laws and ruling tactics. It has also changed the way literature has been portrayed to the readers. This essay is based on Totalitarian government. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini are some of the dictators that had total control over the people and state.
How would life be if the government controlled our thoughts? In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the citizens were controlled by a totalitarian government similar to the way that other countries like Germany had control over its citizens. A totalitarian government is a form of government where that state has unlimited authority and strives to regulate every aspect of society. The way that a totalitarian government achieves control is by the use of technology, media, and influence. In America it is believed that we live in a democratic society but yet we are being surveilled in a similar way that a totalitarian government surveilles their citizens.

First, In the story of "1984" the party is always spying on everyone by using the tele screens so they can watch and hear everything happening in Oceania. This is like today with the NSA always looking and tapping into our phones meaning that they will always know what is happening in our lives, some countries use this to keep us safe but other countries use this to restrict citizens from their human rights. Another tactic a totalitarian government will use is the use of political rhetoric. The party in the novel "1984" use words like CAN YOU FILL IN WORDS HERE WITH EMPTY RHETORIC PLZ.
In the book 1984 by George Orwell (1949) , the government uses physical and mental methods to control the citizens of Oceania. Orwell portrays an undemocratic government, INGSOC (English Socialism), ruled by a dictator they call big brother. Who seems to have the power to control and the right to anything possible. All the people in Oceania have no freedom at all. The government have physical and mental methods of controlling the population.

It also attempts to trace the social class system that existed in the society and find its relationship to the ideologies of Ingsoc. Ingsoc Ingsoc ( Newspeak for English Socialism) is the political ideology followed in the super-state of Oceania. The origins of Ingsoc as a political ideology are rather obscure because the Party keeps rewriting the history.

There are many dangers of a totalitarian government and its ability to have too much control over an individual. While a totalitarian government may show efficiency, it is too controlling and limits society by creating lack of freedom through taking away citizens privacy, not allowing citizens to express their own ideas, and not allowing citizens to have a choice about their family and job. To begin, totalitarian governments completely take away citizens privacy. As illustrated in the novel 1984, when the main character Winston expressed “Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside skull”.
Totalitarianism in 1984 and the Real World The concept of a totalitarian society is a major theme throughout the novel 1984. This theme of totalitarianism can also be applied to the world today. The definition of totalitarianism, a concept used by some political scientists, is a state which holds total authority over the society and seeks to control all aspects of public and private life wherever possible. Totalitarianism can be related between the novel 1984 and current events in the real world. George Orwell incorporated the theme of totalitarianism into his novel 1984 to display the ever changing world around him during the time it was written.
Imagine living in a country under the iron fist of government where authority has no restraints, living in constant fear of your family, a life where thinking for yourself is a scarce luxury. For many people around the world and throughout history, this isn’t a nightmare; this is their reality. These people are ruled by totalitarian systems of government. The Oxford Dictionary defines totalitarianism as “relating to a system of government that is centralised and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state. "

Other examples of totalitarian states are Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s USSR. Totalitarianism involves persistent ideological manipulation and open brutality as well as propaganda. Totalitarianism is seen as an oppressive form of rule and has many disadvantages such as the abuse of power. In the words of Lord Acton (1834-1902) “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
George Orwell has left a lasting impression on the lives of his audience despite only living for forty-six years. Known for his politically critical novels, Orwell’s material is proven relevant, even today, to explain situations pertaining to society or to government. However, the question of how Orwell understood totalitarianism to the extent that he did remains. On June 25, 1903, this Anglo-French writer, originally named Eric Arthur Blair, was born in Motihari, India, to Richard Blair and Ida Limouzin. At a young age, Orwell was sent to a convent run by French nuns, where his hatred of Catholicism was established.
