This technique is used all throughout the novel for example Orwell used the line “And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became the truth."(page 44) The Government in “1984” rewrites history, the party revises the records to align with the current agency it eliminates any evidence that challenges its authority or interpretations of events. By controlling the past the party can control the present and future. The Party also uses Newspeak where they restrict words from the English language. They limit vocabulary and alter meanings of words. The Government overall in “1984” creates a totalitarian state where the truth is hidden and altered. The part of the quote where it talks about the records telling the same tale and how the lie passed in history will become truth shows that the government has control over everything. The party has the power to lie and manipulate historical events. The quote supports that propaganda is the central element of the party’s control. Newspeak is part of the ministry of truth which is where the protagonist Winston works. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania and is a form of propaganda. A great example is the Chinese government. The way that China handled COVID-19 can relate to how the Party in 1984 controls the minds of the people. China's leader Xi Jinping had a signature policy called zero Covid there goal was “propaganda campaign to rewrite the public’s memory”(Nicole) The quote suggest that china is trying to manipulate and alter history, Propaganda just like in 1984 is hiding the past and can go back to the quote used before from George Orwell's novel “"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth."
