Families and parents across the United States of America fear that their child will ultimately grow up to be a violent and merciless teenager or adult. Therefore, leading parents to become helicopter parent or take away anything that remotely relates to violence, gore, or guns. However, according to Gerard Jones, Comic book writer and author, parent should embrace controlled violence, and expose it to their child. Exposing violence to a child will ultimately help them in the near future, causing them to express who they are and learn what they want to be. Through Mr. Jones’ logical reasoning and past experiences, his sympathetic and empowering stories, and his extended research with Melanie Moore Ph.D., Gerard Jones is able to argue why its …show more content…

Gerard Jones was never able to express his rage, anger, or courage, mainly due to the fact that his parents were “well-meaning, progressive, English teachers” (Jones 199). His parents, like most others, believed that violent media was the source of a child’s rage and violence, and caused them to do incredibly violent actions. However one day, Gerard’s mother learned that comic books, although contained violence, contained “pacifism and tolerance” (Jones 199). Allowing Gerard Jones to unleash his inner rage, and open himself to new opportunities, including new friends, talking more, and expressing his true feelings through writing. Through Gerard Jones’ logical reasoning and common sense, Mr. Jones was able to understand that most parents believe that since violence has decreased “40% since the recent decade”, because of parental blocking, the cause of their kid’s violence was violent media. However because of his studies and research he found out that most parents are apathetic to the fact that their children’s social skills have decreased by 40% as well. Gerard Jones knew this would happen through his logical reasoning’s, or past experience and common sense, and began to advocate for violent media. According to Melanie Moore Ph. D., “Children need violent entertainment in order to inescapable feelings…” Children need to be exposed to violence in order to express their feeling to others
