Austin Dye Mrs.Servey English LOTF essay 3/31/15 Lord of the Flies and its Representation of Egos As people develop as human beings, most come to adopt different ways of thinking in several diverse situations. Three forms though always seem to intertwine with one another. As Sigmund Freud once theorized: In each human brain there is the id or primitive mind, the superego or the rational mind, and finally the ego or the balance of those two mind sets. Even the things men and women create resemble the conflict between these mind sets. So as a whole, the id, ego, and the superego do conflict with one another as opposed to the people that obtain them. In order to elaborate, examine one of the characters in Lord of the flies: Piggy. Piggy comes off at the beginning of the book as a clumsy, fat, and generally amusing character with asthma. Aside from all the hassling he endures, he continues to prove his superior intelligence throughout his time on the island. He was the one to remember and tell the others:” Be sure to keep your heads about you”, as the boys began their time on the island. He was a kind observer to Ralph advising him that: “we can’t start a fire without my specs”,” were better off without jack so let him go”. As the story continues it’s hinted that he despises jack from the beginning with his killer instinct and his violent ways. Due to this information, we can assume that piggy is the representative of the super ego in the story because the super ego conflicts with the id and piggy hates
