The Princess Bride is a novel by William Goldman. The book follows the journey of Buttercup and her true love, Westley, as they fight to stay together through many hardships. The book was so popular that it was later adapted into a movie by Rob Reiner. There are a couple of different themes in The Princess Bride. However, the main theme is that love is the most important thing.
These dreams fuel determination to the very end - even past death. When Westley is dead, it seems that all is lost. However, Westley is determined to be with his true love, Buttercup. Even when all hope is lost, Miracle Max asks, “What’s so important? What’s here worth coming back for?” and Westley replies, “Tr...ooooo...luv…”
The fantasy is about Buttercup, a milkmaid, and Westley, a farm boy, who fall in love and have to face many obstacles. The story mainly develops the themes of true love and revenge. However, in the book, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, the story develops the theme of revenge and true love in more depth compared to the movie. First of all, the book provides a detailed past of each main character which makes the reader sympathize with them. For example, in the book, the author has dedicated four to five pages to understand Inigo’s and Fezzik’s past.
Everything is changed when Westley is sent away to go sail. Buttercup swears that she will love noone else until they were returned to each other. Buttercup receives devastating news that her “farm boy was killed” and eventually she was to be married to Prince Humperdinck. The true adventure begins as she is captured by three men Fezzik, Vizzini, and Inigo.
Love in the story is like the energy in a kid, it drives the story and the characters in the story insane. For example, in the story love is what drove Hero into dying and will end killing Tara at the end, “Why should you go on living when she and I are dead? When no one remembers our names?”
There are many things that factor into reasons for loving someone. Often times when people think of reasons for loving someone, they only think about the immediate motives. People do not consider reasons outside the obvious. However, there are many hidden motives that cause people t love one another. Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People” and William Shakespeare’s “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun”, show that love can be influenced by an ulterior motive, through the use of specific word choice and storyline twists.
The Princess Bride has many conflicts and themes but love is the main theme. Buttercup and Westley would go to the ends of the earth for each other. Fezzik and Inigo depend on each other to do a lot of things. Inigo dedicated his life to get revenge on Count Rugen. The Princess Bride is a novel about love.
As displayed throughout history, many beautiful places can be completely man-made, including those that are imaginary. Yet sometimes, even imaginary settings can become more hazardous and realer than anticipated. William Goldman’s The Princess Bride, wholly illustrates this concept by utilizing its intriguing and recurring setting, the Zoo of Death. The process of incorporating both the setting and plot is no easy feat, yet Goldman intertwines both the dire setting of death and the bond of friendship. This dire fate is caused by a Prince with a twisted heart and merciless soul, intent on fulfilling his own greedy desires for war and death.
A possible theme for The Princess Bride by William Goldman is ¨Love Can Make You Do Crazy Things¨. Throughout both of the two stories that are going on in The Princess Bride, characters are constantly doing crazy things to be reunited or show their love for others in the book. Inigo´s love for his dead father causes him to seek vengeance on the six-fingered man who killed him, and when he later find out that Count Rugen was the murderer, he doesn't hesitate to kill him. ¨ ´ If you say I am, I will seek him through the world.
For this essay my book is the Princess Bride by William Goldman. This book is a fantasy, fairy tale, with some humor mixed in to keep things light when the books has dark elements. The two Countries Florin and Guilder are on the verge of war and the prince needs to marry before he can take the throne and his father is dying. The princess of Florin has no hair so the prince refuses to marry her so they take him to a reluctant buttercup.
There’s many different characters and personalities in The Princess Bride by William Goldman, so it would be pretty easy to put certain characters under certain stereotypes. The definition of distress is “extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain.” which basically means in a bad situation. There’s many different Disney princesses that fall under the category of “damsel in distress.” One may be lead to believe that Buttercup from The Princess Bride can fall under that one certain category. Buttercup is usually in some sort of danger in the text and usually needs aid.
Soon enough Westley picks up on their trail and is on his way to save his love, Buttercup. When Westley and Buttercup finally meet face to face Westley is masked so she does not know who he is. Humperdinck catches up to them and pretends to be playing the role of a hero. Buttercup in an attempt to escape pushes Westley down a hill edge and as he falls he says, “As you wish”. Buttercup then realizes that it is her true love and falls after him.
Love is a theme that is not commonly omitted from a classic piece of literature. Not exclusively the conventional definition of love, as between a person and their significant other, but less obvious types. In Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, love is a distinct and overt theme. However, it varies between different types: conventional love, brotherly love, fatherly love, and love for one’s work. Rand very effectively uses love between man and woman to express her philosophy in this book.
In the novel “The Princess Bride”, William Goldman presents an abridgement of what is proposed to be the classic fairy tale by S. Morgenstern but is actually a novel created entirely on his own. The text is of a romantic love story between two protagonists in the country of Florin, a country which existed before Europe yet after the discovery of the Americas and Australia. Over the course of the novel, Goldman writes a story which strays from the normal parameters of a fairytale. Character design conflicts with the stereotypes and the word choice (Evil Stepmother, etc) is not typical. The timeframe set for the novel and the subplots within are rather ridiculous at times, even for a work of fiction.
