Evil, love, wisdom, slavery, and sacrifice are all ideas that take human form and are demonstrated throughout the gothic novel Dracula. The character of Dracula demonstrated evil, while the character of Mina Harker represented love. Van Helsing accurately portrayed the idea of wisdom, and Quincey Morris showed sacrifice. Additionally, Jonathan Harker perfectly symbolized the idea of slavery. Each character in Dracula can be connected to an idea; therefore, there are many examples of personification throughout the entirety of the novel. He had decided to travel by ship, therefore giving him full access to all crew members who were aboard. Dracula slowly killed each crew member day by day, until none of them were left. In comparison, when Dracula arrived in England, he began to feed on innocent people in the area. He would even use their weaknesses against them in order to use them for their blood. For example, Lucy Westerna had a habit of sleepwalking, and Dracula took advantage of this by compelling her to travel to him during her sleepwalking spells. There was a specific instance where Lucy was found by her friend Mina with a dark figure above her, and there were noticeable marks on Lucy’s neck where her teeth had previously been. However, when Dracula is finally destroyed at the end of the book, Mina notices a look of relief on his face. Dracula had been held captive in his own personal, evil misery for an extensive amount of time. The facial expression that Mina noticed could be considered a sign of Dracula’s evil nature leaving his body. Once he had been destroyed and his soul was restored and considered pure, he was no longer evil, and he could finally rest in
