A general of the Confederate State Army for the Civil War, Robert E. Lee is related to Harper Lee, an American author who fought for racial equality and black woman’s rights. Even though both were related, they had different beliefs, Robert E. Lee opposed racial equality for African Americans while Harper Lee supported them. Lee’s bestselling novel To Kill a Mockingbird showed the reality of how people treat each other. Lee’s expressive writing style brought attention to her ideas. Lee made an impact in British Literature by changing the movie industry, impacting the school system, and bringing attention to real issues such as injustice and treating each other with respect.

“Alabama high school students have pondered in prose how life has changed in the South since Harper Lee’s depiction of the fictional small town of Macon, Alabama during the Depression,” says Elliott from NCPR. Lee’s novel opened people’s eyes that they can fight for a better place to live in. For example, Adriannne Ferris from Thorsby High School wrote about her friend experiencing sexual abuse, a similar topic to what Lee wrote about in her novel. She used the essay to call on the state of Alabama to protect and provide for its youth.
