Anna Winesdoerffer Winesdoerffer 1 Mrs.Giannetti English 102 26 August 2014 Harriet Tubman: From Escaped Slave to Underground Railroad Conductor Conductor of the Underground Railroad, Rescuer of over 300 slaves, and escaped slave; also known as Harriet Tubman. Born Araminta Ross, she later took on her mother’s name, Harriet, and the nickname “Minty” (Outman). Tubman was born into a family of enslaved African Americans. The family consisted of her mother, Harriet, her father, Ben Ross and ten siblings. Her siblings were not as fortunate as Tubman and were sent to be auctioned off. At the age of twenty-nine she made the journey from Maryland to the Pennsylvania, becoming free from slavery. Once in Pennsylvania she was conveniently hired as a cook. This was her first of many trips. She later went back to the plantation and brought her family to Pennsylvania with her. After many trips and saving over 300 African Americans, she was later given the nickname “Moses of Her People” (Outman). Tubman risked her life 19 times, taking enslaved and hopeless people to start a new life. She knew slavery was wrong, so she took action to fight it. Death was a highly possible factor in these trips she made. Many wanted posters were posted for not only Tubman, but the escaped slaves she helped as well. In most cases, ‘Slave Hunters’ were hired and sent out to find the escapees. The hunters had viscous dogs to aid them in tracking the
