The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, came out in 1967. This novel revolves around the main difficulties that the younger population experienced from around the 60s, which they overcame throughout their lives. The narrator mainly explores how their social statuses have caused many difficulties and differences between each group. The two main groups were differentiated between the ‘Greasers’ and the ‘Socs/Socials’. The Greasers were known to be the ‘poorer’ class compared to the Socs who were more of the ‘upper, richer class’. The narrator, Ponyboy Curtis, describes his relationship with his brothers, Darry and Sodapop Curtis, throughout the novels and the obstacles he faces. Ponyboy is initially introduced as a member of the Greasers and has a very strong connection with his best friend Johnny Cade. Throughout the story, Ponyboy enters a challenge when he is running away from his house, where he is then surrounded by the Socs. One of the Socs, Bob, nearly drowned Ponyboy, which nearly took his life. While he is recovering from the drowning incident, he sees a dark pool of blood around Bob’s mouth. Johnny responded “They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you.” The main component that led up to this moment was how Darry is Ponyboy’s Guardian. Since the brothers’ parents died at a young age, Darry was legally taking care of Pony and Soda. Ponyboy was always in misery whenever he did something wrong. The main issue Ponyboy faced was that he always felt Darry was upset with him and did not love him. When Cherry asks Pony what Darry is like, he says, “He thinks I'm a pain in the neck. He made Ponyboy's life more challenging as he was always picking on him more than their other brother, Sodapop. As the three brother’s parents passed away at a young age, as an older brother, Darry took on the role of parenting both Ponyboy and Sodapop. Darry focused more on Ponyboy than Sodapop as he was the youngest. This put major pressure on Pony, which had altered him. In the incident of Ponyboy coming late after his curfew, when Darry found out, he slapped Pony in fear and disgrace. Ponyboy ran away and then the happening of Johnny killing Bob presented, making Darry think about what he did and instantly regret it he then says, “‘Pony I didn’t mean to!’”. This shows that Darry didn’t mean for his actions, which then put him in a situation of guilt. The author has demonstrated the importance of character attributes of Darry very clearly and has shown how his character acts, speaks, and thinks. This has made a significant impact on Darry’s character development. Sodapop Curtis, the middle brother, has supported Ponyboy throughout all his experiences.
