In the novel Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses indirect characterization to illustrate how the main character Holden Caulfield is careless. My reaction to the main character is that I don’t like him because he is very careless person. “They kicked me out.” “I was flunking four subjects and not applying myself and all. They gave me frequent warning to start applying myself.” So Holden had warnings to start trying, but he didn’t take them. He was going to get kicked out of Pency, and didnt care enough to apply himself to stay in school. The author of the story used characterization to reveal Holden’s personality.
