Stephen kallestad English 11 Mr Rhoades 1/18/22 Kite Runner Final The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a book that has many important themes like loyalty and betrayal, relationships, and risk. The book goes through the first half of a Pashtun boy/man’s life, Amir. The first theme seen in the book is loyalty and its counterpart betrayal . The first way this is shown in the book is Amir hiding his birthday gifts and money under Hassan’s bed to make it seem like he had stolen the gifts to get rid of Hassan. At the moment of the quote baba is confronting Hassan. He is confronting Hassan with Amir right next to him and Ali next to Hassan. Ali and Hassan end up leaving as servants. “Did you steal that money? Did you steal Amir’s watch, Hassan?” Hassan’s reply was a single word, delivered in a thin raspy voice: “yes.” (Hosseini 105). The way this aspect of culture is shown is when Amir leaves the party because he feels he isn’t needed , Rahim Kahn comes out to smoke and starts talking to Amir. Rahim khan is telling Amir about how his relationship with a hazara affected him , and how it would have affected her future. “She would have suffered. My family would never have accepted her''( hosseini 99). This shows how his family being Pashtun and her being Hazara would have been worse in the long run. She would most likely have suffered from potential abuse and harassment even though he loves her. He could also have potentially been disowned for being with a hazara. This shows that he was willing to be loyal and try to go past their ethnic statuses
