Hubris is the overbearing pride or presumption, arrogance. Oedipus was the king of Thebes, Creon being also the king of Thebes after the death of Oedipus, and Antigone the daughter of the late king Oedipus. In the plays, Oedipus the King and Antigone, Sophocles, the author, explains to the readers how hubris led to the downfall of Oedipus, Antigone, and Creon. In the play, Oedipus, Sophocles informs the readers how Oedipus pride led him to his downfall. To begin with, Oedipus shows his pride in stating, “I count myself the son of chance, the great goddess, giver of all good things- I’ll never see myself disgraced.” (Oedipus 1188-1190). This showed the readers how Oedipus thinks very highly of himself. Oedipus thought how himself as a god because he saved the people of Thebes from a plague by solving a riddle. This all happened before he knew of his prophecy of how he had killed his biological father without knowing it. In the beginning he ran away from his adopted family thinking that he would marry his mother and kill his father. However, he did not know that they are not his biological parents. Creon start off by saying, “I now possess the throat and all its power.” (Creon 193) This shows how the power of the throne had gotten to Creon’s head. he had used his power to not allow Antigone to bury her brother the respectful way. in his act of power, he lost his son to suicide because he would not listen to him. with the loss of a son, he had also lost his wife. his wife had killed herself because she lost her son. he was using his power of the throne against his people. this showed his downfall because the power getting to his head had cost him his family. in the end the author had shown hubris if the character of Creon in the play, Antigone, which had led to his
