Two Steps Forward One Step Back Huckleberry Finn is an important classic novel by, Mark Twain, however the novel at times seems to work against itself, creating a long journey full of up and downs for the main character Huck, a thirteen year old boy, and a runaway slave, Jim. Huck is confused over the justness of slavery and mentally battles between the law, and his morals. Although he progresses significantly throughout the novel, becoming a more selfless person. He reverts back to his games and adventures, because at the end of the day he is only a thirteen year old boy. When they were separated Jim is more concerned with Huck’s well being than his own, showing his selflessness and maturity. Huck never having anyone truly care about him, doesn’t know how to react and decides rather than give back affection, to prank Jim: "What's the matter with you, Jim? You been a-drinking?"’(ch 15 p 83), Huck acts like the whole ordeal never even happened to lighten the mood. Eventually when Jim catches on to the prank, he is not at all amused. The same as any other child the worst thing a superior or respected friend can do is be disappointed in you. When Jim voices his disapproval Huck instantly regrets what he did, and sits disappointed in himself before he can bring himself to apologize. This is a Large step for him,
