The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an American classic, it was the starting point for all great American Literature. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been awarded all of these honorable titles because of its abnormal and controversial plot line. During the time period when the book was written, it was unacceptable to view African- American’s as anything other than slaves. They were viewed as inferior to whites and were treated like property, they had no rights. The main character of the book, Huck, disagrees and disobeys these norms and pushes the boundaries of society when he becomes friends with a slave from his childhood; Jim.
At the beginning of the novel, we see that Huck is negative about African-Americans. In chapter two, Huck makes it seem that African-Americans are not honest or educated enough, “Jim said the witches bewitched him and put him in a trance, and rode him all over the State, and then set him under the trees again and hung his hat on a limb to show who done it. And next time Jim told it even more exaggerated... Jim was monstrous proud about it… Niggers would come miles to hear Jim tell about it, and he was more looked up to than any nigger in that country.
We know that Twain is not racist, but he did use the N-word to show what kind of people his characters were. Delila Lloyd wrote a document that addresses both sides of the issue, but one of the points that sticks out is "Take the N-word out of Huck Finn, and is it really Huck Finn?" (Lloyd). Huck uses the N-word because he grew up in a society where the word was meaningless, and was used to describe slaves as scum. The word practically means nothing, but not as in the word doesn't have a meaning, but in the sense that the people described as the word are meaningless.

Unfortunately, Huck is very much a product of his time, and has little respect for black people. We can see one such example of his childishness
“I was a-trembling because I’d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it… ‘All right, then, I’ll go to hell’-and tore it up” (Twain 205). In Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a warm-hearted, young teenager living in the 1840’s escapes from his abusive father and sails away on the Mississippi River. He encounters a recognizable, runaway slave named Jim and aids him on his quest to freedom. As the two encounter many hardships and obstacles (such as slave hunters, bandits, and con men), their friendship binds together despite the difference in skin color. The book, Huck Finn, contains three main themes that are still relevant today: friendship, education, and the nature of man.
English classes in some schools throughout the United States do not have The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain on their lists for their reading curriculum. Parents and/or grandparents whose ancestors have lived their lives as slaves refuse to allow their children/grandchildren to read the novel because of the use of the "n" word over 200 times. However, because they only think about that one word, they don't know that the book actually portrays many important themes. Three meaningful subjects are explored in friendship, religion, and heroism that are still relevant today.
One of the major differences between Huck and Jim was their racial traits. In the book, the author have been mentioned a word “nigger” (Twain 102) several times to show racial discrimination going on during the period. When Huck was talking about Solomon in the bible, Jim had a bad reputation on him as criticizing his action as a fool for instructing to split baby into half (one of stories in Bible). While they were having argument Huck self talks to himself, “you can’t learn a nigger to argue” (Twain 102). This is definitely showing discriminations on human being just because of their inherent traits.

Some of the things in nows society are different because of all the changing technologies but are still mainly the same. Killed a nigger. Well, it’s lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt.” This is how people felt about African Americans in this time, and is was common to talk this way about them. Huck was the wild card growing up in a racist community. Huck has the slang of this time to his advantage to describe African Americans, but as he grows closer with Jim, he stops using offensive terms.
Towards the end, Huck is the boy who helped a slave get his freedom and his rights, If there were to be another boy in Huck’s place, he would’ve loved having a slave do all his work for him. Huck on the other hand is very uncomfortable having a slave do his work for him, because he is not used to it and rather do everything himself. Although Huck hold on to the aspect of racism, he still has more respect for blacks than others at the time being. Huck’s has been raised in a place and time, where slavery and difference between men was normal. In the beginning of the novel, Huck didn’t respect black people and didn’t care about them either.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic novel that takes the reader on a series of thrilling adventures full of life threatening situations, racism, and slavery. The author Mark Twain, uses the novel to highlight the flaws in society by creating a character like Huck, whose personal sense of morals and justice are more noble than those of the very people trying to civilize him. Throughout this captivating novel Huck endures his fair share of trouble and morally challenging decision but he always comes out on top by following his heart and doing what he feels to be right.
Society has a big impact on people’s actions and their growth as an individual. Sometimes the impact is beneficial but sometimes, society teaches us negative habits and morals. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, Huck Finn struggles between doing what society teaches him and following his heart. In many instances in the book, Huck’s heart trumps society’s lessons and his conscience about helping Jim, a black slave, escape. When being stopped by slave traders while sailing down to Cairo, Huck’s heart and conscience fight over whether to protect his friend or follow the rules confirmed by society but in the end, he followed his heart.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic book, and in my eyes classics like this never die unless the people of newer and/or future generations who read it read it or consider reading it write it off. There are books that in this day and age are illegal to buy because people say things like “it is racist against the African American community”, and in a few instances that is correct, but there are a few things that those people fail to consider. People fail to consider that books like this one are written about a time where the black community was seen as nothing more than creatures with a darker skin tone that they sell as slaves (and I say “creatures” not to be/sound racist but because at the time they weren’t seen as people. Unfortunately, they were seen as slaves and nothing more), and the people of today’s society think that there will be little to no racism or racist comments.
