Lord of The Flies Reflection The boys lose their innocence as the book progresses, we see in the beginning when Jack first goes hunting, he can't kill the pig because he is still civilized. In the middle of the book we can see Jack go through with killing a pig. We can decipher that Jack has lost all of his innocence. Ralph and Piggy on the other hand lose their innocence eventually too but not in the same way Jack did, they lost their innocence in exchange for maturity. We see toward the end of the book that Ralph and Piggy mature with their decisions and their reactions. Throughout the book we see Jack lose his humanity for savagery, we can see this when Jack goes to kill a pig in the beginning and cant kill it, towards the middle of the book we can see Jack killed the pig with no remorse, in fact Jack enjoys it so much that he makes a chant whenever he hunts. “kill the pig, cut her throat, spill the blood” (Golding 72). When the boys first heard about the beastie all of their inner fears came out, and they started speculating what it looked like. I believed they did this because they were kids, and their imaginations were running amok. We see at the end of the book that the beast isn't real, and that it was just the boy's inner fears coming out to scare them. When Simon finds the “beast” he realizes that the beast never existed, he believes that it was just the boy's fear coming out. According to this quote Simon tells us what he believes the beast is, “Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us.” (Golding 80). Fear is one of the important factors in the book, it makes the boys be cautious and decisive with their decisions, the boys use their fear to make safe decisions so they don't get hurt, or even scared.
