It is very common in literature to allude to a separate or multiplex idea using literary elements while presenting a subdued idea on the surface. The reason behind this literary trait is the realism in a person. In an excerpt from the novel Poor Visitor by Jamaica Kincaid, Kincaid uses personification, hyperbole, and allusions to display the complex situation the narrator was subjected to. The narrator of the novel begins by using personification to identify her setting. She states that “It was not the sort of bright sun-yellow making everything curl at the edges, almost in fright, that I was used to, but a pale-yellow sun, as if the sun had grown weak from trying too hard to shine”(Kincaid). By describing the sun as something weak and dull, she conveys a sense of dullness over the entirety of her new life. To display the shift toward things she considered normal, she says, “I was no longer in a tropical zone and I felt cold inside and out, the first time such a sensation had come over me” (Kincaid). Although she was not physically cool inside and out, she uses the statement to express both internal and external distaste for her circumstances. The statement is also powerful because of her statement that the sensation had never come over her.
