In the story, “Marigolds”, the author, Eugenia Collier uses imagery, diction and connotation in deep way. One example is of connotation is “... how thick were the bars of our cage”. This gives a negative connotation because it's pointing out how big their poverty is. An example for imagery is “running together and combining like fresh water color painting in the rain”. This shows how she and her friends would run around and play together.

Night by Elie Wiesel is a book about a boy and his family being deported to concentration camps and going through very rough experiences. Not unlike many writers, Wiesel takes his pieces and expresses them through emotions or words. These words and/or expressions help the reader feel what the character in the book is feeling. The ways Wiesel expresses the way Elie feels is through imagery, literary devices, and first person point of view. Elie Wiesel uses Imagery to express the character’s thoughts and feelings by explaining in great detail parts of a book to make the reader picture a scene or image.
In the two scenes on pg 61-65, Wiesel uses the stylistic technique such as imagery to give the reader the feeling of being in that scene and imagine it. Another stylistic technique is metaphors and diction give a better feeling of the story and give it more dramatic. An example of his imagery is when Wiesel said: “He was still alive when I passed him, his tongue was still red, his eyes not yet extinguished. ”This quote helps the readers make the words Wiesel uses to create an image of them and picture it in their mind.
Question 1: The three examples of figurative language that I am going to analyze are, rhetorical questions, personification, and similes . Rhetorical question: “Here or elsewhere, what did it matter? Die today, or tomorrow, or later.” (Wiesel 98) This example of a Rhetorical question really adds to the text by almost forcing the reader to think to themselves, and actually try to answer the question that is being asked. It involves the reader and therefore can make the story more appealing to them.
In all three mediums, the authors and presenters are all averse to the ideas of minors being tried as adults, death row and solitary confinement. I agree in all three cases. Minors should not be tried as adults because they are not adults. While there should be some level of culpability for their actions, it should never reach the point where they are tried as anything other than a juvenile. Many youth, for no other reason than biological constraints, lack the psychological maturity to make logical and well-reasoned choices.
Dillard implements imagery all throughout her essay, which gives the reader a clear picture of the events occurring. For instance, she describes her husband “gesturing inside a circle of darkness” as a result of him gradually travelling farther away from her (Dillard). Ultimately, the use of imagery in this case represents the loneliness the narrator begins to feel. The author also utilizes metaphors to get her message across. Dillard compares “grammar and lexicon” to a “decorated sand bucket and a matching shovel” because without the other, they will not be able to fulfill their purpose (Dillard).
In this passage of James Weldon Johnson's novel reflects on his youth and his infatuation with an older girl from his church. Through the use of literary elements, such as imagery and symbolism, Johnson conveys the narrator's complex response to his crush and the emotions that it inspires in him. One of the literary elements that Johnson employs in this passage is imagery. The narrator uses vivid descriptions to convey the physical appearance of the girl, creating an almost ethereal image of her in the process.
In the novel, he uses imagery,diction, and detail to set the evil mood. In the novel, Imagery is used to help further describe the scenes, giving off an even more sinister feeling to the plot. Through the use of literary devices like similes and imagery, Jane Kenyon accentuates her life experiences such as living with her husband and her incessant depression. She is capable of creating the peculiar effect of making the reader see a picture of the original subject and the object of comparison. For instance, Kenyon uses similes to compare emotions to vivid, captivating objects in order to display the theme she is communicating throughout the poem. In The Suitor, Kenyon states that “Suddenly I understand that I am happy / For months this feeling / has been coming closer, stopping / for short visits, like a timid suitor” (Kenyon, The Suitor, 9-11).
By bringing in the reader and letting them witness the tension and conflict, Joyce attempts to do what most writers desire, let the reader feel as if they are actually there and included in that scene. Since the reader is so closely tied to the story and each minor detail, the reader realizes that the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, shares something in common with the other characters seated at the table, as well as the reader themselves. “The thing we share is our death” (Foster 9). All of the characters in that room will eventually die and that is foreshadowed by the title of the book, however the characters in the novel are unaware of that. People also share similarities in the fact that everyone’s lives are different ranging from the major life changing events, to the tiny details at the surface that make up who you are.

Personification allows the readers to see the world from the house’s persepctive, helping them relate to the house on a personal level. Unlike Hirsch, who directs most of his focus towards the emotional state of the house, Hopper uses indirect forms of communication(e.g. shading, color, shapes and atmosphere) to help readers draw inferences about the house. For instance, the shadow casting the house sets a depressing mood for the painting. The darkness overshadowing the brightness implies that the house attracts no one despite its desire for visitors. Hopper’s emphasis on the shadow sets the mood for the picture, allowing us to visualize the depressing aura of the house.
Joyce allows readers to see another side of middle class Ireland. When one thinks of Ireland, they might believe the stereotypes of alcohol, potatoes, dirty, hardcore, and many others; but, if one were to read James Joyce, then their perspective might
Lamb to the Slaughter is an action packed short story about a wife who is let down by her husband and proceeds to kill him as an act of revenge. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.
