Rochester to act in questionable ways towards his relationship with Jane, and affects Jane’s life and her relationship with Mr. Rochester. Prior to meeting Jane, Mr. Rochester got tricked into marrying an insane woman, and the effects of that relationship on Mr. Rochester causes issues involving trust and secrecy surrounding his and Jane’s relationship. At Jane and Edward’s wedding, Mr. Mason interrupts the wedding and accuses Mr. Rochester of already having a currently living wife, and although at first he tries to deny it, he then admits that he has “been married: and the woman to whom I was married lives!... I daresay you have many a time inclined your ear to gossip about the mysterious lunatic kept there under watch and ward.” (Brontë 296).
The tactics he employs to get his way also provide insight into a major theme of the novel. The major motive for all of Mr. Rochester’s deception was to win Jane’s heart so he could marry her. He is shown to be very intuitive
Rochester's first interaction was when Mr. Rochester fell off his horse and Jane helped him in the woods. This might foretell that Jane is going to help Mr. Rochester again when he has troubles and need help getting through them. Then we they meet at the house, he kind of ignored Jane and he was “left alone” and “did not take his eyes off from the group of the dog and child (Bronte 175), however after he asked Jane to sit down, he immediately started acting rude and impolite. Jane felt that this was completely normal, and if he did otherwise, she would be shocked. Then Mr. Rochester deems interested in Jane because of the way she answers all his questions.
Jane's life at the Lowood Insitutuion in Jane Eyre can be seen as a positive experience mostly but there are some negative experiences. The negative about the school was that she was publicly humilated by Mr. Brocklehurst and was forced to stand on a stool as he critisezed her. While that negative was very hurtful to her, it is followed by on tof the best things to happen to her. She tells Miss Temple the truth about her past and afte rfact checking with Mr Loyd, Miss Temple gathers all of the girls and clears Jane's name once and for all. Another positive thing that happned to her was she met a girl named Helen who she becma fast friends with.
Oftentimes, minor characters help to reveal a theme or contribute to the characterization of the protagonist. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Helen Burns serves as a foil character to the protagonist, Jane Eyre. Throughout the novel, Helen’s docile and pious nature helps to emphasize Jane’s development from a passionate girl to a modest woman. Helen’s theological beliefs also allow her to serve as a foil character to Mr. Brocklehurst, the headmaster of Lowood Institution, and St John Rivers, a zealous missionary, in order to reveal how Christianity is used to control Jane. Compared to the male characters in the novel, Helen’s positive use of religion proves to be more effective in encouraging Jane to adopt Christian values.

Bronte 's Jane Eyre transcends the genres of literature to depict the emotional and character development of its protagonist. Although no overall genre dominates the novel exclusively, the vivid use of setting contributes towards the portrayal of Bronte’s bildungsroman (Realisms, 92) and defines the protagonist’s struggles as she grapples with her inner-self, and the social expectations of her gender. The novel incorporates Jane’s frequent conflicts, oppression, isolation and self-examination as she defends her identity and independence. Set amongst five separate locations, Bronte’s skilful use of literal and metaphorical landscapes, nature, and imagery, skilfully intertwines with the plot and denotes each phrase of her maturity.
One of the biggest character foils in Jane Eyre is between Mr. Edward Rochester and St. John Rivers. From the first time we meet these characters, it is easy to tell the two apart. While one is ruled by a religious forces the other is controlled by emotions. Jane has to make a choice, and decide how she is going to live the rest of her life. At the end of the novel, she makes a choice between what is expected of her, and what she wants.
Both characters, venturing out of their gender roles, find ways to compliment and figure out who the other person really is, and, in the end, a burgeoning love fully blooms. When examining the gender roles of Mr. Rochester and Jane, both are a blend of each and life seems better when conventional gender roles are forgotten. In Rochester and Jane’s first meeting, the two begin to show their blended gender roles immediately. Rochester is first described as having a “dark face” with “stern features”, with a complexion that seems, “ireful and thwarted” (146).
(Bronte 292). When Jane sustains the courage to stand up to Rochester’s remarks, he starts to admire her more and more for her need to rebel and her grasp to attain freedom, and begins to love her. Rochester feels this way because despite his social status, he has feelings that equal the intensity of Jane’s. They marry because
The titular Jane in Jane Eyre struggles to free herself from the power of others to achieve independence throughout the course of the book. As a child, she fights against unjust authority figures, and as an adult, she spurs multiple unequal marriage proposals. Bronte, through Jane asserts that a woman should be independent from others. When Jane was young, she tried to free and defend herself from unjust authority figures. When Jane 's aunt unfairly confines Jane to the Red Room, Jane launches into a verbal diatribe against her aunt.
{Rochester admits that he could not be alone and that he has always craved some type of love even if he didn’t love his mistress back.} He tells Jane, “Yet I could not live alone; so I tried the companionship of mistresses. The first I chose was Celine Varens--another of those steps which make a man spurn himself when he recalls them. You already know what she was, and how my liaison with her terminated. She had two successors: an Italian, Giacinta, and a German, Clara; both considered singularly handsome.
Cary Fukunaga’s adaption of the Charlottle Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre have many differences one being the narration of the book adapted onto how it is displayed on the screen. In the novel Brontë writes in a first-person narrative, being Jane Eyre herself telling back the story of her life. However in Fukunaga’s adaption instead of a first-person narrator, the story is rather shown as it happen, still however as it did in the memory of Jane Eyre, in a sort of a flash back of memories. As the novel is read the readers may take note of a lot of use of pronouns such as ‘I’ and ‘we’, indicating that the novel is being written in the style of a first-person narrator. Whereas in the film there is no one person speaking throughout the sequence.
