In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, many of the character have experiences in their life that challenge them, and ultimately change who they are. Throughout the book, people's traits and characteristics will fluctuate, and adapt to their circumstances. This essay will discuss how the character of Jane Eyre has events in her life that alter her personality and how she views the world. In other words, Jane Eyre will have one opinion at the beginning of the book, but by the end it’s completely changed. This is important to understand these changes in her in order to recognize what the author is trying to communicate. One of the first major events that happens in Jane’s life is her going to Lowood. While she is there she gains a very close friend, Helen Burns, and looses her almost as quickly. Her Aunt Reed is a cruel and unloving woman and all she wants is to get rid of Jane. Mr. Brocklehurst, the superintendent of the school board at Lowood, is also an unkind man who treats Jane poorly. Upon arriving at Lowood, Jane is labeled a liar and Mr. Brocklehurst tells the other students at the school to shun her. In many ways, the experience of being sent away to a sad and lonely school hardened Jane.
